Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Derinya,
Thanks to our terrific Community Connect Parents who have set up our lovely Mother’s Day Shop today. Special thanks to Suzanne Chivers and Janelle Hogan for sourcing such lovely gifts and setting up the shop as well as rosters etc. What a great community we have at Derinya. We acknowledge the wonderful work carried out daily by all of our Mums in helping our children to have a happy, thriving life. We never underestimate the importance of mothers in good times and in bad. Mums are always there to support, nurture, shelter and have fun with their children. Wishing you a lovely, simple, happy day this Sunday. Remember lovely Mums are like shining stars- sometimes you can’t see them but they are always there for you. Happy Mother’s Day.
The Derinya Stadium will become a polling booth on Saturday week. With the amount of publicity in campaigning we are seeing in the media recently, it is a time when we do not necessarily see the best examples of positive adult behaviour. In many instances there are classic examples of adult bullying in the media. The news also reports daily on many sad and violent activities both within Australia and globally. It is no wonder that some children suffer from anxiety and a loss of hope for a bright future with all they are exposed to. It is an important parental responsibility to be the buffer for your children. There are many adult images they do not need to see and it is our responsibility to protect them. A child’s life should not be weighed down by anything and they have a right to a happy, worry free, resilient future. We all have important work to do in this area. Kids News is a news site for children with harmful content removed. Many classes use this as a child-friendly way to keep up with the news. Take a look at www.kidsnews.com.au
Winter is almost upon us and it has been great to hear rain on the roof once again. Hopefully the drought will soon be broken. Autumn at Derinya brings such lovely colours to our garden but also signals the start of the cold and flu season. Please remind children of personal hygiene to help prevent the spread of colds, etc.
Many of our Grade 2 students had a wonderful time at the Melbourne Sea Life Aquarium this week. They were beautifully behaved and showed great curiosity.
Grade 6 students head to Camp Coonawarra on Monday. We wish them a terrific full week camp and loads of personal challenges we know they will all aspire to overcome.
NAPLAN: Good luck to our Grade 3 and 5 students sitting the NAPLAN tests next week. We know you will do your best and remember it is only a snapshot in time. Your real learning takes place daily at Derinya.
Grade 4 off to CERES Sustainability Centre next Tuesday. We trust you will learn more about saving our planet!!!
Choir Workshops: Lindi Morrison organised Choir workshops this week for some year levels run by the Australian Childrens’ Choir. They sounded fantastic and we look forward to a performance soon. Our band is playing at assembly tomorrow and our Preppies are also performing.
