Hello Derinya Community!
Mrs. Roth is off camping this week with our Grade 6 Students, something she looks forward to every year, so I’ve stepped in to provide you with the school news for this week. From all reports, they’re having a great time and we expect to see them arrive safely home tomorrow afternoon.
It seems that every year NAPLAN testing manages to make the news headlines. Many schools have undertaken NAPLAN online for the first time, shifting away from the hardcopy version, only to find that the testing process didn’t go as smoothly as was expected and technical issues prevented some schools from completing the tests in a timely manner. Derinya made the decision to postpone the move to digital testing in anticipation of any teething issues, which now seems to have been a wise decision. Our students have completed the tests without any issues and we’re glad to wrap up NAPLAN for another year. A lot of focus is put on these tests by various stakeholders, but it is important to always remember that the tests are simply snapshots of student performance on a specific date, not an indication or measure of the bigger picture that makes up any single child. Every child has unique qualities that will never shine through on a NAPLAN test and we should all stop to recognise those qualities frequently! Well done to all the Grade 3s and 5s for getting through the week.
We are getting so close to opening up the new Derinya Kitchen Garden. Natasha’s Kitchen will be operational before the end of this term, most likely in the next few weeks. I thought it timely (being Mother’s Day last weekend) to mention Natasha and why we’ve named the Kitchen after her. Natasha was a Derinya Mum to her son Tim (who graduated from Derinya a few years back) and she was instrumental in gathering the funding to build the kitchen. Through her battles with cancer, Natasha continued to push and push to acquire the money to build the kitchen to repay the school for the support Derinya showed her during her illness. We’ll never forget Natasha and the work she did for our school over the years, one of a kind, a great Derinya Mum!
As the kitchen nears opening, we’ll be looking out for parent helpers - it won’t be able to function without the correct adult to child supervision so we’ll be needing a few parents from each class to volunteer their time to help out in the kitchen and garden. Soon we’ll be putting together a timetable for the remainder of the year, with each class scheduled to have a full day (or two) in the Kitchen with our new Kitchen Garden supervisor Jackie Loader. If you’re interested in helping out with your child’s class, don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher to let them know. Teachers will be in touch with all parents when dates are established.
Election Day is this Saturday, so don’t forget to vote if you haven’t already. Come past Derinya if you can and pick up a democratic sausage to help raise money for our Derinya Dance Teams! A team of parents will be selling bacon and egg rolls as well as sausages and drinks.
Have a great weekend!
