Dear Parents, Students and Friends,

Can you believe we are half way through the term already? We have had a great start and achieved so much. Congratulations to all of the Grade 6 students who attended Camp Coonawarra for a full week. The students had a fabulous time and we were blessed with stunning weather every day. It was terrific to see the children take themselves out of their comfort zone and try new ventures. Team work was a focus and the students built stronger relationships with each other. Huge thanks to the teachers and parents for making this camp possible.

Good luck to all children competing in the annual whole-school Cross Country at Overport Park tomorrow. Hopefully the morning weather will be kind and enable us to have a great time. Excellent to encourage all children to have a go. Every finisher gets a point for their house. Reminder that there is no assembly and that children can wear house colours.

Frankston City Council have visited the school and installed timber bollards at the roundabout to stop cars from going on the curb to queue up to get into the drive through. Interestingly many people do the right thing and keep going up to the top roundabout if there is no room in the queue but some cars are now sitting in the roundabout with their indicator on waiting to get into the lane. If you looked in the rear vision mirror you would see the mountain of traffic at a standstill behind you with no one able to move. The top roundabout was built so that if people could not get into the queue legally, they could go up and turn around and try again. Please do the right thing. It is a traffic offence to block the roundabout and we have had parents fined before. We care for the safety of our children. Council will be patrolling.

Derinya Dance Showcase: Congratulations to all children who competed in the Derinya Dance Showcase Competition last Tuesday coordinated by Lindi Morrison. It was a lovely event and so great to see so many parents and grandparents in the audience enjoying the performances. The Year 6 Dance Team hosted the event and it was a terrific example of positive student agency. They were so confident and well spoken. They were also very supportive of some children whose dances didn’t go quite as planned. Congratulations to Lindi who goes above and beyond to make events such as these happen and to teachers who judged.

NAPLAN: Congratulations to our Years 3 and 5 students who completed NAPLAN last week. Remember NAPLAN is one test in one subject at one moment in time and is a small snapshot of student performance. Some children perform much better under normal classroom conditions.

Elections BBQ: Thank you to the Derinya Dance parents who coordinated the Election Day BBQ. They raised in excess of $1300 and this was yet again an example of student agency. Winners!

Community Connect Trivia Night: Friday June 14th. Please come along and join a table or make up your own to have a night of laughs and fun with our trivia champs; Derek Williams, Mark Everard and Matthew Hill. Guaranteed to be a great night. Book tables through Tina at the office. Cost $15 per head. BYO drinks and nibbles. 7pm – 10pm.

Prep enrolments 2020: If you are an existing Derinya family and have a child who will be enrolling in Prep next year could you please ring Tina Ramsay our enrolment officer and collect an enrolment form. We are shaping up numbers for next year and need to determine how many children will automatically be placed.
