Dear Parents, Students and Friends,
I am really impressed with the level of learning happening daily at Derinya. Staff have almost finished writing semester 1 reports and there has been significant progress for many children. The tone of the school is delightful and we have children engaged in a huge range of learning activities both within the classroom, in specialists subjects, on line and on excursions and incursions to extend and challenge our children’s learning. This afternoon I visited all of the Grade 5 classrooms to view their art exhibition. Each student has undertaken a collection of art pieces to put on display. The whole school visited the art exhibition and parents came in the afternoon. The standard of their work was amazing and it goes to show that when you have the opportunity to express yourself, wonderful things can happen. I have asked that we display their photography at the office as it is fabulous. Congratulations to all of the year 5 teachers and students for undertaking such wonderful work.
I then visited 4JM’s Japanese lesson being taken by Therese Sakamoto. The students were working on their iPads sending emails to the Japanese pan pals. It was interesting to see the level of Japanese language they were using and how totally engaged they were. Great work also to Therese and 4JM.
Yesterday morning the Grade 4s were undertaking their swimming program at PARC as part of the DET funded “ Swimming In Schools” initiative. Our teachers were very impressed with the organisation and expert effort of the swimming teachers at PARC who make the time the children have in the water very efficient, enjoyable and focussed on improvement. Congratulations and thanks to them also.
After lunch yesterday the school student journalists came and gave me a copy of our student newspaper – What’s Up Derinya? It is a great piece of work and very entertaining. Congratulations to the Newspaper Team including teachers involved. The school is constantly abuzz with learning initiatives and I am forever amazed by the daily learning happening at Derinya. Lovely work Derinya!
