Welcome to our week at school. The Year 4 classes have had an action-packed time at their camp. Huge thanks to the staff and parents for ensuring an exciting and memorable event for all the happy children.

Please note the following points concerning upcoming events:

  • This Friday is a Free Dress day in order to gather donations of prizes for our fair. If all children can bring a small prize worth a couple of dollars (no more than $5) for many various stalls and prizes (see examples in the note sent home this week) we would be very grateful.
  • Next week the Year 5 children are off to Camp Kangaroobie where they will explore the Shipwreck Coast and enjoy an action packed Camp program. We wish you all the best in your 4 days away.
  • Our Foundation students begin full time as of next week, (note Monday is a public holi- day) so we look forward to seeing them each day. We are delighted with how settled and engaged they are. Well done to all families on a smooth start with your children, they are a credit to all your hard work.
  • Good luck to all the Divisional Swimming Children next Wednesday. We wish you all the best and know that you will be amazing competitors.
  • Next Friday is the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. Our school will be focusing on positive behavioural strategies to combat these issues. There is a na- tional definition of bullying for Australian schools. See below for your reference. Please note due to the detail in this definition the children will be focusing on the fact that bullying has three main features.
  • It involves a misuse of power in a relationship
  • It is ongoing and repeated, and
  • It involves behaviours that can cause harm.

Bullying is an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power, or perceived power, over one or more persons who feel unable to stop it from happening.

Bullying can happen in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying behaviour is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time (for example, through sharing of digital records). Bullying of any form or for any reason can have immediate, medium and long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders. Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.

I would like to invite all members of our Derinya Community to consider lending a helping hand to our Derinya Art and Craft Exhibition. The DACE team are after some ‘back stage crew’ to help out with many small but incredibly important jobs. They love an army of ants to work together and find the friendship forged very popular. The jobs are varied which means whatever your skill set we are sure we can match you up with a small task. Some of the areas we are looking for support in are:

  • Helping with coordination of the event sponsors
  • Expertise in establishing a fully computerised payment and reporting system
  • Social media gurus
  • Graphic designers to assist with the catalogue, advertising materials etc
  • Assisting a subcommittee: Jewellery/Art/Craft/Logistics/Silent Auction...
  • There is also a host of small tasks varying from carpet-laying to painting or helping out on rosters......please don’t be shy in coming forward.

If you are happy to discuss any role that you could fulfil please email the DACE team at: daceevent@gmail.com Remember many hands make light work!

Finally, a reminder that next Monday is a public holiday. Have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday morning.
